How can I learn to make simple human sketches such as the ones used for fashion design?

The answer is actually pretty complex. You learn to draw and you will learn to draw people. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards is a good place to start, as mentioned above. Go to your library and talk to the librarian about it. If they don’t have it they can get it through inter-library loan. I also recommend, strongly, Kimon Nikolaides’s The Natural Way to Draw. Again. Go to the library and talk to your librarian about it. If either book is useful to you, then save your pennies and buy it. You will probably be using it for decades, like the rest of us.

Meanwhile, this is not a solution but it’s a help with lots of pointers about figure drawings:

Where is the best place to go for teens for summer fashion design school?

I would really like to learn more about fashion design, since that is what I am aspiring to be, and does anyone know what is a good summer program or school for fashion design for teens?

The college I attend (Academy of Art in San Francisco) offers pre-college programs for summer, saturdays and online in different majors. Here is a link to the website http://www.academyart.edu/degrees/pre_college.html . I know a couple of people who went during high school and they had really fun experiences.

Also, check out local colleges around your area too for high school programs and if a local community college will let you take classes too (if they offer some type of fashion degree).

What kind of fashion design is this?

I want to learn fashion, but I don’t want to sew or work wit pins and mannequins. What is the name of the Fashion design where you strictly draw?

Fashion illustrator.
It’s possable to get a job in that but you really do need to learn the sewing and stuff as well. Even if you dont want to do it for your future job.
You gain a much greater understanding of clothing when you have to think about how it is put together and it helps designs.
You would have a hard time getting a job in it without the sewing/pattern background
If you don’t have the sewing background you’d be much more likly to just be doing illutrations of other peoples designs.

How can I, as a teenager, learn about fabrics, techniques, and other aspects of fashion design?

I took a class which basically taught me how to follow a pattern, but I want to know about different types of fabrics, and different techniques and such. Also– on Project Runway, do they draft a pattern before they make the garment, or just do it from scratch? Because I thought they did it from scratch until the season 4 episode where Jack used his shorts to make a pants pattern…And how do you draft a pattern? ANY help is appreciated, thanks!

I plan to attend college for fashion design, but don’t know how to draw, is it too late to learn?

I am 17 years old and I will be graduating from high school next year and I plan to go to college and study fashion. I don’t know how to draw but I have great ideas. I was wondering if it’s too late or is it still possible to learn?! I would love to have my own fashion line someday.

Its never too late I would recommend taking art classes AND two books that i recommend are 9 Heads and The fashion sketchbook by bina Abling. I used these books when i first started drawing fashion figures it teaches you how to draw basic figures and also how to draw from models in ad’s etc Both of these books also cover hair and fabric details. For smaller details I would go with the fashion sketchbook but for the overall body figure i would go with 9 heads but they both cover each well both detail and the human fashion figure. I used these two books when I started designing in high school (i took a two year vocational fashion design course) Also you will need to know basics in sewing. I never knew how to draw until i opened these two books they will give you everything you need to draw period. Fashion figures aren’t that hard to draw and you can also trace too. to get into a fashion school you just need an awesome portfolio (collection of designs photo shopped or coll aged onto boards with a corresponding mood board/inspiration board) and a sketchbook where you make rough sketches and put down your ideas and practice make your sketchbook a reflection of yourself! I also suggest wathcing fashion design shows such as project runaway (on lifetime) and The Fashion show (on bravo) I hope I helped Good luck!!
