BACKGROUND INFO:
Hello. I am going to be a senior in high school next year and am therefore looking into my college options. I have a few schools that i really want to go to and they obviously require portfolios for the fashion design field…

QUESTION:
I know that some people trace the figure of the body from a magazine or etc and then draw on their own clothing. Is that ok? For a portfolio? Or is that not a very good idea? I am pretty adequate at sewing skills and definitely have enough pieces to choose from for my portfolio, but im not too great at drawing…so i kinda have to trace. :/

What do you think? Is tracing ok? The design is still my own, just the figure is traced.

ALSO! does anyone know of any good fashion design books that teach how to draw folds in fabric and all that?

Thanks in advance. :]

As long as you get your designs down to show people, nobody cares whether you have drawn it on paper or on your backside. The thing is, in the design world as its clear and people can see it, it is perfectly acceptable.

So although the school may be a bit blah blah about tracing, it is there job to teach you how to draw human forms better. Just show off your drawing skills (you do not have to constantly have fashion drawings.) Also if your stick with humans, break them down into circles and squares, and then fill in to make it look living.

I would also suggest at the start of your portfolio, you do a mood board showing all the designers or things you are influenced with.

Any more questions just ask.
