MaximsNewsNetwork: 22 January 2010 – UNTV: Geneva – At the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG), prominent fashion designers, inspired by sustainable and ethical practices, gathered yesterday (21 Jan) to showcase their work made of natural and recycled materials. UNOG hosted a fashion show featuring the works of 52 prominent designers such as Diane von Furstenberg, John Rocha, Manish Arora, Bora Aksu, Thakoon, Noir, EDUN and Ciel. The fashion show, which was called EcoChic Geneva, was organized by Hong Kong eco charity, Green2Greener, and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Christina Dean, founder of Green2Greener, who spoke at the beginning of the show said that the clothes were made of natural fibers derived from bamboo, soya, alpaca, natural cotton, hemp and silk. The event signifies the UNCTAD launch of the International Year of Biodiversity and features two days of panel discussions by fashion industry experts. Eduardo Escobedo from UNCTAD said that the show provided an opportunity to promote sustainability and biodiversity as fashionable. Around 450 people from Government institutions, the private sector and non-government organizations were at the UNOG to witness the event. Noirs designer Peter Ingwerson added that sustainable fashion is the buzzword among fashion designers today. The best of EcoChic Geneva will be showcased next in Basel in two weeks time …
