It was mentioned in a 50′s fashion documentary that models didn’t cross legs as they walked down the catwalk… they glided. As far as fashion is concerned it sums up the decade – the women simply glided through it. A dress has the magical effect of making a woman look utterly feminine, but the spell is broken when she wears those two-legged things.
From Flowers for Mrs Harris by Paul Gallico: ” …Mrs Harris had attained her paradise. She was in a state of dreamed-for and longed-for bliss. All of the hardships, the sacrifices, the economies and hungers and doing-without she had undergone faded into insignificance. Buying a Paris dress was surely the most wonderful thing that could happen to a woman.”
“I created flower women, with tiny waists like stems and skirts billowing out like petals.” Christian Dior

actually only to an …
actually only to an extent… the cool thing about this era is that most women knew how to fudge their way through a lot of these looks. Magazines had tutorial sections on how to take last season’s dress or hat and update it or how to sew a dress just like what you see in Paris… Unfortunately in our quest for equality, we proved that women should not be FORCED into home economics classes but we forgot what a gift it was to have that kind of knowlegde readily available.

Why can’t women …
Why can’t women dress like this anymore…well, I agree sweatpants and flipflops aren’t the most attractive of things, but for me personally that gorgeous “50′s silhouette” is simply not worth the structured underwear, nor the pencil style skirts the limited mobility. And anyways…femininity is not in the clothes, it’s in the person.

Women loved being …
Women loved being women and it showed. Beautiful clips from a bygone era. I am too young to know those years, but when I look at old magazines, films or simply vintage family pictures, I see another kind of decency in society. You won’t find any girls with tattoos in those clips, neither with the belly out, sweatpants and flip flops. It’s a shame that with all our development today, we have lost so much in our lives. Thank you for the magic moments of those clips.

I always liked …
I always liked women in a dress better then dressed like a man. I was borned in 1943 so I grew up in the 1940s and the 1950s.And I go to The United Pentecostal Church. And they still hold on to some of this about the ladies most of them anyway wearing dress’es. At least in church. Skirts are okay also.

Im puzzled. …
Im puzzled. Comments on this and other vintage fashion vids are mainly by women who all mourn the loss of femininity… “I wish women dressed like that today” or “I would dress like that if only…” and so on. Well, you don’t need to be a walking advert for the 50s – all you have to do is wear a skirt or dress. It could NOT be simpler.

I would dress like this in a minute if I could find clothes like this. The clothes were definitely more feminine. I don’t like today’s clothes for women; they’re too masculine.
